Mature Muscle  -VS-  Young Muscle
There is one thing on stage that you can't substitute for, Mature muscle. Lets
do some comparisons between two athletes. Lets start with one of the best Pros
to ever grace the stage in my opinion, my friend , The X-MAN, Toney Freeman!!
Toney's muscle and symmetry is one of the best in the business. Toney has
proven to everyone that age is not a factor and only makes you better in the
sport of bodybuilding if done correctly. Toney keeps his body within 20% of his
contest shape in the offseason which allows him to shape his body as well as
grow. He does not use the offseason as an excuse to eat garbage. Toney follows
a clean diet and has changed his training over the years as his body has
changed.
If you run into Toney in the gym, ask him how many sets he does and how many
reps. Toney will tell you "I don't know man, till I feel like the muscles are
pumped". Toney has built his bulk now he concentrates on shaping. Higher reps
and lighter weight he says. Does Toney Freeman still put on mass you ask? Hell
yes he does, because he knows how to do it!! Why go heavy and take a chance of
injury? The muscle is there, just perfect it.
Now lets take a future star in the sport, 22 year old Ty Young. Ty recently
competed in The USA's in Vegas. Ty hit the stage at 244lbs. Thats big right. To
you and me of course it is but when someone like Ty stands next 20 other
Superheavies ranging from 240 to 280lbs and have been training for 5 to 15
years longer than Ty, their muscles look much different! Being big doesn't
always take the trophy home. Ty trains heavy as hell on certain weeks to help
put that mass on and other weeks he does light weight and higher reps. To get
that X-man physique takes years of training your muscles to look a certain way.
Ty has a very good shape but like every athlete there is room for improvement.
So, the moral of the story is to get the shape that can take an overall trophy
or to maximize your physique takes time. You have to learn your body as Toney
has and play with dieting and the weights. Find out what works for you. If you
don't know what works for you, seek out an IFBB Pro in your area. Knowledge is
power. The worst thing you can do is ask several different people what they do
and try their programs on yourself. Most likely the guys and girls at your gym
have no clue what actually works for them because they are taking so much Sh*t,
over the counter supps and probably designer drugs, that they cant pinpoint
what works. Be smart about your supps and training. It can take you to the top
or make you a train wreck. BE SMART!!
